DLSU Green Archers win in OT defeated UST Growling Tigers

The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers took home the UAAP Season 76 men's basketball championship after a heart breaker win over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers that went to overtime, 71-69, Saturday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Finals MVP award was given to Jeron Teng who finished with team-high 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He defeated his brother who plays for the UST "When the buzzer sounded I really didn't know what to feel. On one side we're champions, but on the other side, I feel my brother's pain. He played his heart out, he deserves to be MVP," he said. "UST had a good game. We just didn't give up, we won for the La Salle community."

The older Teng played his last UAAP game, and will bow out of the amateur ranks after leading UST to back-to-back Finals appearances.

Filipino-American Kris Rosales works out for Nets

The top Filipino-American player in college last season has been working out for the Nets. Kris Rosales, the NAIA player of the year from Hope International, says he worked for the Nets at PNY Center. More likely a D-League Draft candidate than a training camp invite. He is a California native, a 6'0" point guard who averaged 12 and 6 for the Fullerton-based Hope International. He was player of the year both in the Golden State Athletic Conference and the NAIA.

"In Brooklyn I met Jason Kidd and Deron Williams in the weight room. I was in the same weight room as him and I remember when I was in college I would have never thought that I'd be in the same weight room as Deron Williams, same room as Jason Kidd so it's pretty amazing," said Rosales, who wears No. 5.

Philippine Azkals wins in Hong Kong

James Younghusband scores the lone goal of the match that lift the Philippine Azkals to a 1-0 win over Hong Kong. The goal came from a broken play after a Hong Kong defender deflected a Stephan Shrock cross.

Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge had a great night with several stunning saves in the second half to deny goals from the Hong Kong squad.

Before Tuesday's match, the Philippines had not beaten Hong Kong in 6 previous FIFA-sanctioned meetings.

Azkals coach Michael Weiss deployed a strong starting line-up consisting of Etheridge, skipper Chieffy Caligdong, brothers James and Phil Younghusband, Stephan Schröck, Chris Greatwich, Rob Gier, Jeffrey Christiaens, Carli De Murga, Paul Mulders, and Juani Guirado.

With Schröck pulling the strings in midfield, the Azkals established a foothold early in the match. The Azkals broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when James Younghusband scored with a header.

Hong Kong tried to look for an equalizer, with their best attempt coming in the 69th minute when they were given a penalty for a foul by Guirado inside the box but Etheridge, saved the penalty shot.

Hong Kong had 18 shots, with 7 on target. The Philippines had 7 shots, with only 2 on target.

Bob Arum said Pacquiao may never again fight in U.S.

Bob Arum revealed that Manny Pacquiao may never fight in the U.S. again.

The topic came out when Arum was asked about Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s bold decision to take on Mexico’s star unbeaten world super-welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Sept. 14 in Las Vegas.

“Let’s not even go there,” said Arum, who has failed repeatedly in attempts with Mayweather Jr. and the boxer’s promoter, Richard Schaefer, to stage the super-fight.

“By fighting outside the country, as he’s doing in this Rios fight, Manny doesn’t have to pay U.S. taxes anymore – at a rate of 40% for a foreign athlete.

“If this pay-per-view and other things take off like we think they may, I can’t imagine Pacquiao will ever again fight in the U.S.”

Pacquiao will fight former world lightweight champion Brandon Rios on Nov. 23 in Macau, China.

Arum said the fight will be on the morning of Nov. 24 in Macau so the pay-per-view will air live on a Saturday night in the U.S., he also have a deal to allow Chinese consumers to purchase Pacquiao-Rios for what equates to $5 to view the bout on their tablets or cellphones.

“We could do as many as $10 million to $20 million in sales with this. It changes everything. Will it work? We’ll see in November.”

Arum has also negotiated with resorts in Singapore for a possible future Pacquiao bout.

Donaire Lost to Rigondeaux via unanimous decision

Nonito Donaire lost his superbantamweight championship to Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux via a unanimous decision.

All three judges scored it for the former Olympic gold medalist and World Boxing Association titlist, with the scores reading 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111.

Donaire scored the bout’s only knockdown in the 10th when he landed a crunching left that dropped Rigondeaux for the first time in his professional career, but the Cuban came back storng int eh last two round to put the outcome beyond doubt.

Rigondeaux proved to be an elusive target for the hard-hitting Donaire, frustrating the Filipino with his speed and body movement. The Cuban, who was fighting in just his 12th professional bout, took control early and never gave Donaire a chance to get into rhythm.

The Filipino Flash appeared to have turned things around with that 10th-round knockdown, but instead of capitalizing on his newfound momentum, slowed down in the 11th and allowed Rigondeaux to steal the round. In the 12th, Donaire injured his right eye after both fighters fell to the canvas, and whatever chance he had to steal a win evaporated as he spent the rest of the round covering his right eye and unable to go on the attack.

The punch statistics showed that Rigondeaux was the more active and accurate boxer: he threw 396 punches and connected on 129 of them for a 33% rate, while Donaire threw 352 and landed only 82 for 23%.

It was the first loss in 30 fights for the Filipino Flash, and comes just eight days after Brian Viloria lost his flyweight belts via split decision to Juan Francisco Estrada and four months after Manny Pacquiao lost via knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Donaire fell to 31-2 with 20 knockouts, while Rigondeaux stayed undefeated in 12 bouts. Around an hour after the bout ended, Donaire posted a message on his official Twitter account, thanking his supporters and congratulating Rigondeaux.

Araneta expects bigger things for Azkals

BUOYED by the recent success of the Philippine Azkals in the AFC Challenge Cup Group E qualifiers, football chief Mariano Araneta Jr. is optimistic the Nationals would figure prominently in next year’s main tournament in Maldives where a spot in the Asian Cup is at stake.

“It was a well-deserved victory for us, and you saw they have the talent. If they work together for a long time, the teamwork will be there, and I hope we can qualify for the Asian Cup,” Araneta said.

He said the PFF would “move heaven and earth” to have the Maldives Challenge Cup held on International Football Federation “match dates since this tournament is already a qualifier for the Asian Cup.

“I have talked to three members of the Asian Football Confederation executive committee explaining that just like the other countries in the upper Asian bracket, the Maldives (competition) is a direct qualification for the Asian Cup. There should be no discrimination as with the other qualifiers.”

Araneta said the AFC executive members he talked to were sympathetic to his appeal, with the issue to be taken up when the AFC Executive Committee meets in May.

“At the very least, what the AFC can do is to have the tournament fall on FIFA match dates,” said the football chief, pointing out this would enable strong overseas players such as Stefan Schrock, Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara to suit up for the national team.

He added this was a major reason why the PFF requested the AFC to reschedule the Group E competition from early March to March 22 to 26 because the schedule fell on FIFA match dates, freeing players from club commitments to play for their respective national squads.

This enabled coach Michael Weiss to assemble a formidable squad that won two straight games, capped by a stirring 1-0 win over 2012 AFC Challenge Cup runner-up Turkmenistan. It marked the first time Azkals beat the squad from the former Soviet Republic in three outings.

National team manager Dan Palami echoed Araneta’s sentiments, saying with the present crop of players his main challenge would be “to allow this group to play longer together.”

He said they would take advantage of all the FIFA friendly dates in their build-up for the Challenge Cup, beginning with a friendly match against Hong Kong in the former British colony on June 4, a possible clash with Vietnam on June 7 in Cebu and on June 12 against “a quality opponent” in Manila.

“We will probably play more outside the Philippines to take advantage of our overseas players,” Palami said.
