Aguilar got in NBA D-League

Japeth Aguilar’s determination to get into NBA Development League has finally paid off.  The 6-foot-10 Aguilar became the first Filipino to be drafted in the D-League, which serves as training ground of the world’s top cage pros, after the former Ateneo Blue Eagle and Western Kentucky Hilltopper was picked in the seventh round by the Santa Cruz Warriors.

The 2009 PBA top overall pick must now land in the regular roster of the Santa Cruz Warriors, the D-League affiliate of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, before the league’s opener on Nov. 23.

“Thank you Lord! God is in control of everything. I will work hard for the next two weeks,” Aguilar posted on his Twitter account @japethaguilar25 after the Warriors tabbed him at 109th overall.

The Warriors will open their season against the Reno Bighorns on Nov. 30 at the Reno Events Center in Nevada.

Aguilar played for Talk ‘N Text in the PBA and the Smart Gilas national team and hopes to get a call-up from an NBA squad. Last year, 60 D-League ballers were called up to the NBA.

Filipino-American Avery Scharer, who was also hoping to join Aguilar, wasn’t included in the list of eligible players for the 2012 NBA D-League Draft.

Azkals end 99-year drought win Peace Cup

The Azkals beat the Chinese Taipei, 3-1, to sweep the tournament. They demolished Macau  (5-0) last Thursday and win over Guam (1-0) last Tuesday.

Coach Hans Michael Weiss hoped that criticisms will now be appeased. A lot of fans were fuming when Phil and James Younghusband were not included in the lineup. “We’ve also been criticized for some things. Hopefully, they understand now what happened in the past,” Weiss said. “(I hope that people) cool down a little bit before criticizing”

Fil-German Dennis Wolf opened things up for the Philippines in the 10th minute.

OJ Porteria made it 3-nil after Chieffy Caligdong struck one in the 43rd minute.
Chinese Taipei pulled back in the 52nd after a miscommunication.

But that lone goal by Taiwan was the only one conceded by the Azkals, who dominated Macau, 5-0, last Thursday.

The Philippines took home the crown by going undefeated with nine points.

The 29-year-old Wolf finished with four goals and emerged as the tournament’s top scorer and Most Valuable Player, while Eduard Sacapano and Jeff Christiaens were named best goalkeeper and best defender, respectively.

Senate bill seeks to commend Smart Gilas

Yesterday (Tuesday) Senator Koko Pimentel filed Senate Resolution No. 854 which seeks to commend and recognize the achievement of the members, coaching staff, and the management of the Philippine men's basketball team, the Smart Gilas II, in the 34th William Jones Cup.

Smart Gilas last Sunday defeated an American team 76 to 75 to win the Jones Cup. The R. William Jones Cup is an international basketball tournament annually held in Taiwan since 1977.

The Philippines had previously won the Jones Cup in 1981, 1985, and 1998.

Smart Gilas beats USA, 76-75, to win the Jones Cup

Smart Gilas Pilipinas climbed back from a 14-point third-quarter deficit to nip the United States, 76-75, and capture the 34th William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan.

LA Tenorio, the littlest guy on the floor, buried a 19-foot jumper with 19.1 seconds left that proved to be the go-ahead basket as the Americans failed to convert on their last possession and were forced to foul with nine seconds left. Gilas was able to dribble away much of the clock before the USA fouled Jeff Chan with 1.9 seconds to go.

The sweet-shooting Chan missed the first free throw and then intentionally missed the second, but Marcus Douthit tapped the ball out to give the Americans one last chance with nine-tenths of a second left. With no timeouts remaining, the US was forced to throw a length-of-the-court pass with their final shot clanging off the rim to give the Filipinos the crown.
Smart Gilas finished the round-robin tournament with a 7-1 record to capture the title, the first for a Philippine team since 1998 and fourth overall in the tournament’s 34-year history.
Tenorio came up big in the fourth period, helping fuel a 10-0 run that enabled the Filipinos to grab their first lead of the second half at 61-59. Then with 50 seconds left, the Alaska Aces court general spun in the lane and sank a tough floater that pushed Gilas ahead, 74-73. A breakdown in defense allowed Jermaine Dearman to score unmolested under the basket with 34 seconds to go, but after a Gilas timeout, Tenorio used a Douthit screen to bury the winning shot.
